> Why is Gmail clipping my emails and how do I fix it?

Gmail clips emails that exceed certain size limits to prevent inbox performance issues. Here's what's happening and how to fix it:

Why Gmail clips emails

Gmail clips emails when they exceed these size limits:

  • Desktop: 102 KB
  • Mobile: Varies by device (20 KB on iOS, up to 75 KB on other mobile devices)

The size limit includes all text, HTML code, styling, links, and other content — but not image file sizes, since images load from external sources. Why is my email being clipped?

Why clipping matters

When emails are clipped:

  • Recipients see a "View entire message" link instead of your full email
  • Your tracking pixel gets clipped too, so open rates won't track correctly
  • The Gmail-generated version strips out styling, making your email look broken

How to fix clipped emails

1. Reduce your email's code size

Keep your total email code under 102 KB. Focus on:

  • Simplifying HTML structure
  • Reducing inline CSS
  • Removing unnecessary code

2. Move your tracking pixel to the top

If you're concerned about open tracking, move the tracking pixel to the top of your emails so it loads before any potential clipping point.

3. Avoid code-heavy elements

Header bar blocks are particularly code-heavy. If your message is at risk of clipping, consider using an image block for your logo followed by a table block with links instead.

4. Test before sending

Use preview tools to check your email size and appearance across different devices before sending.

From our experience: The iOS 20 KB limit is applied inconsistently, but if a large portion of your audience uses Gmail's iOS app, design for the smaller limit to be safe.
